This week, a friend told me they'd taken a job with lower pay and a smaller title. "It's not my dream job," they said. "But I need the money." My heart ached for him. The last two years have been the hardest l've seen in 30 years of watching the job market. Talented people who once had their pick of opportunities are taking lower salaries/titles because they don't have any choice. This in a world that's full of "Find your purpose." And "Do work that lights you up every damn day." F**k purpose for a minute. There's no shame in taking the job that feeds your family. There's no shame in staying in an industry you don't love if it keeps the lights on. Some of us are just trying to get through the month. And that's okay. This season won't last forever. I used to believe I had to "love what I do" every day. That if I wasn't perfectly aligned with my highest values, I was failing. What a load of privileged bullshit.

I have been thinking about a career change for a number of years, but without much direction. I have worked in the UK finance sector for over 20 years, and within finance teams doing various roles for over 25. I'm a maker at heart, but also technical and would like some way to balance these more going forwards.

My need for change is being pushed by constant talk of values at work, but their values seem to always be compromised by the ultimate end goal, and I feel at odds with it especially with world events at the moment. It also doesn't help that I am AI resistant.

Does anyone have experience changing career when over 40, and especially when contemplating leaving a finance role? Really lost in the multitude of jobs to know where my skills might be valued and at a company with good ethics?

In meinen aktuellen Job gibt es keine Zukunftsperspektive und das Umfeld ist eher fragwürdig, deshalb suche ich ein Umfeld zum Arbeiten, bei dem ich tatsächlich Linux Administration machen darf und nicht kaputte Java Anwendungen, wegen zu vielen Plugins debugen soll.

Sollte schon ein Qeerfreundliches Umfeld sein mit einer gesunden Fehlerkultur und ohne RTFM-Mentalität (wenn überhaupt vorhanden).

A difficulty has developed in my small-town area (unincorporated population about 300) of coastal Northern California that might be just the thing for a community-minded (or -desiring) auto mechanic looking for a fresh start. The forest town basically has two businesses: the general store and the hardware-store-plus-auto-shop—both community hubs. The wonderful owner of the latter, in his mid-70s, is having trouble finding reliable mechanics and seems at his wits’ end. The current two guys seem . . . more interested in other things. My guess is that the right person or people, doing a good chunk of respected work, could eventually run things. The community is a mix of persuasions who more-or-less make it work; an even keel is key. Cost of living can be high unless you’re lucky and/or give it time; this endeavor would be more about being in this beautiful place. Let me know if you’d like more info. I’ll gauge the response and then see if he’s up for receiving emails.
