Was impressed to see on a website from a company up North selling performance parts for #cars and #workshop services, that prominently stated they were paying "UK Living wage".

They also had 2 vacancies for #mechanics which would be a decent salary for that region (it would be good down South too!)

But it shows a wider problem - both vacancies demand 2 years experience as well as the usual NVQ Level 2 / 3 - although I'd expected they to want more experience than that for the salaries quoted (and its a more specialist job than general mechanics) - for younger folk there's the dilemma of how are they going to get the 2 years experience if no one is willing to hire anybody who has just completed #college ?

This 1986 Owosso Pulse Autocycle is one of a claimed 326 examples produced by the Owosso Motor Car Company in Michigan between 1985 and 1990. Chassis #216 is said to have been previously owned by drag racer ”Big Daddy” Don Garlits and was acquired by the current owner on BaT in December 2023. Powered by a Kawasaki liquid-cooled 498cc DOHC parallel twin paired with a sequential six-speed manual gearbox, the vehicle is finished in yellow with black graphics over tandem seating trimmed in color-coordinated vinyl. It features a sliding entry canopy, a CD/stereo system, and disc brakes as well as 13″ primary wheels and 8″ outboard wheels mounted to skirted outriggers.

(Also, sadly, with "a standard 9″ infotainment screen with Google built-in, offering access to Google Maps and more." Not that it will matter to me, since there's no indication this will be sold in the USA.)

Cooler today (only 25°C) so did exterior #valet of #Vauxhall / #Opel #Corsa - started with #snowfoam mix of Autoglym Polar Blast + BiltHamber Surfex HD at 10% (wouldn't normally use anything as heavy as that but you can see state car was in previously!)

Contact wash with CarPro Reset. No pics of snowfoam due to working fast because heat!

Single stage polish with Koch Chemie 3.01 mild compound+carnuba #wax, cheap cordless DA (compatible with #Makita batteries) and orange pad that came with it.

I'm fairly new to machine #polishing and didn't use best technique and too much polish (though some on YT recommend keeping pad saturated when working in hot weather to prevent polish drying out, and this seemed to work, #bodywork on this #car far from perfect anyway!)

Wanted to get out of house but not deal with heat/crowds so did a bit more #valeting

Cleaned up #engine bay and tested against #WaterIngress - mechanic must have refreshed / checked seals on brake cylinder bulkhead (where water gets in) / or unblocked the drains (leaves and other muck stops them up) as I poured in 6 litres of water where rain would go and none of it got inside the #car

Everyone will be happy to see this back on the road, there's more demand for #automatic #cars than manual ones from our current staff (many of them are from Commonwealth countries where #driving with #AutomaticGearboxes is more popular)

Not the most refined but better than the other #Easytronic 'box in the other Corsa we had..

Test for water ingress - the water is going through the gulleys in the engine compartment and to the ground (not inside the car where you don't want it!)

Inside of car which is still dry, also showing new airbag ECU in position (it has the purple paint marker on it which the Ebay sellers put on as a security marking (so folk don't yoink the corroded circuit board from another one and put it back in and claim it was defective)

2006 #Vauxhall / #Opel #CorsaC (one of our fleet #cars sat in yard for over a year) saved from scrap - #WaterIngress (known issue with these cars) led to mould and airbag #ECU getting drowned (took ages to source one that wasn't already goosed for same reason but I found one from London a few days ago.).

Cleaned out mould a few days ago, mechanic next door fitted unit and new starter battery - car now runs and even passed MOT!

Still needs other work, fleet insurance and tax has expired so can only drive it around the yard at the moment or I risk being pulled over (random ANPR checks not uncommon here!), way too hot to do full exterior #detail today so did another extraction of interior seats and some more steam cleaning to get rid of moss growing in various places

This 1959 Renault Petit-Panel is a US-market, front-wheel-drive cargo van that was refurbished under prior ownership. It wears a repaint in orange and beige, and power comes from an 845cc Ventoux inline-four linked to a four-speed manual transaxle. The cargo area is accessed via a sliding side door and a three-part rear door, and it offers a 14″ lift-over height and 60″ of vertical space. Equipment includes independent suspension, hydraulic drum brakes, steel wheels, tube-frame bucket seats, sliding side windows, fresh-air vents, and Jaeger instrumentation.

Took advantage of lighter evenings to clean piano black plastic and navi screen on centre console of #GolfGTI (I don't know why this piano black stuff became so popular since about 2016, it is a pain to keep clean).

Also cleaned steering wheel with leather cleaner (it gets shiny after a few months driving due to grease from hands, should have a matt finish)

At least its not too late so folk don't wonder "who on earth is honking a horn in the yard?" (horn works with ignition off, and its easy to press the horn ring when cleaning the steering wheel)

Nearly bought aftermarket air intake kit - noped out on idea as they are hecking expensive, although aesthetically pleasing don't provide much power gain, can cause issues with PCV valve (to the point #oil is forced past #gaskets), heat soak in heavy traffic/summer weather - and I should know better at my age anyway than to even consider adding such things to my #car (I'd also have to pay a few quid extra in insurance as a further #mod )

I often drive home very late at night and extra noise is going to piss off neighbours, and would only be a temptation to drive faster / more aggressively than I should - especially with traffic hazards and and price of #petrol (as expected, #GolfGTI gets more thirsty under hard acceleration) #cars #autos

What’s behind the transit protests? Last year, centre-right politician Rodrigo Paz was elected president of Bolivia, marking a shift in government leadership in a country that had been under socialist rule for decades. Bolivia, which is facing a budgetary crisis, ended a fuel subsidy, putting pressure on the country’s working class. The fuel subsidy that Paz cut was decades-old and kept petrol prices at 2006 levels. As a result, quality fuels became increasingly inaccessible. Transport workers say that they were forced to use lower-quality fuel and claim that, because of that, their cars, trucks and buses have damaged engines. They are demanding compensation from the government for the damage. The strikes brought public transport to a halt in several major cities around the country. Among them are the administrative capital, La Paz, as well as El Alto, Cochabamba, Oruro, and the constitutional capital, Sucre. They have created at least 70 roadway blockages, according to the Bolivia Highway Association. A litre of diesel fuel under the subsidy cost 3.72 bolivianos ($2.06 per gallon) and premium petrol cost 3.74 bolivianos ($2.05 per gallon). Without the subsidies, those prices now jump to 9.80 bolivianos ($5.40 per gallon) for diesel and 6.96 bolivianos ($3.84 per gallon) for premium petrol. Transit workers also demanded shorter queues at filling stations, as well as road repairs.
