I have spent 35+ years researching #crime, 25 years on #RoadSafety (both for #bicycles and more recently #cars ) and can't get my head round this case.

Why on earth did a well qualified Desi lad with a University degree, a good job, clean #driving licence, no previous #criminal record and no obvious involvement in the worst aspects of #CarCulture (which is rampant in #Essex) decide to hoon it in the busy main street at school starting time and crash into two teenage lads on foot? One dead, the other permanently disabled and driver got 10 years #prison (he will serve about 5-7 of these inside) and 13 year driving ban..

Only seven new petrol-powered cars were sold in Norway in January.

The country, which is the frontrunner in the uptake of electric vehicles, shifted a record low number of new fossil-fuel cars in January, information from the Norwegian Road Traffic Information Council reveals.

Only seven petrol, 29 hybrid and 98 diesel cars were registered, while more than 2000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were sold.

Lad of 13 took his family's campervan for a joyride in #Dorset in Southern #England - got nicked and brought up before #Court and now has 6 points on his provisional licence (which means that if he does pass his #driving test at 17 (the legal driving age in UK), he cannot commit even a minor traffic violation without getting licence revoked straight away and having to redo theory and practical tests, although if he waits until 18 or 19 the points would have expired)

Not sure if Dad making him valet #cars to pay off the fine is the best punishment - it could be creating worse temptation (like what happened to the lad in Felixstowe!)

Hopefully he might discover #bicycles in the meantime (if he hasn't already) and that shows him the value of #RoadSafety

A film from around 1952-1954 of #traffic in the town centre of #Ipswich #Suffolk - shot by a #police detective from the CID -unsurprisingly he is behaving very much like a human #CCTV camera, and appears to be concentrating on the busy roads and his fellow officers carrying out traffic duty (there weren't many electric traffic lights in those days!) - maybe this was originally used for training purposes?

Even though there are way fewer #cars , a lot more #cyclists and #trolleybuses were still in use then, the town centre is still quite busy!

Many of those streets are pedestrianised today.

I just looked up the stats for EV sales in Norway in 2025, and here's the pie chart for what's classified as "passenger cars".

The labels are:
Electric: 95.9%
Chargeable hybrid: 1.5%
Hybrid: 1.3%
Diesel: 1.0%
Gasoline: 0.3%

It also lists Hydrogen and Gas, which rounds off to 0%.

For vans, the market share for electric is 45.2%. I'm not sure if the classification is related to actual car body shape or number of seats. They have different registrations.

This 1981 HMV FreeWay is one of a claimed 700 examples manufactured by High Mileage Vehicles of Burnsville, Minnesota, between 1979 and 1982. Refurbishment work completed under previous ownership involved repainting the fiberglass bodywork orange as well as replacing the acrylic windows. Power is supplied by a 453cc four-stroke single mated to a continuously variable transmission. The vehicle rides on 12″ ITP wheels and is further equipped with a central headlight, a single left-side door, a removable roof panel, a rear hatch, a single fixed-back seat, and a push-button radio. It was acquired by the selling dealer in 2025, and subsequent service involved replacing the carburetor, repairing the fuel pump wiring, and servicing the drum brakes.

European EV sales overtake petrol for first time.

Sales of electric vehicles in Europe rose 30% to a record high in 2025, with battery-powered models outselling petrol cars for the first time in December.

The rise came despite a 38% drop in Tesla’s annual sales across the continent, with Elon Musk’s group losing its crown as the world’s largest EV maker to Chinese rival BYD.

Thinking of trading in my Skoda Superb PHEV for a fully fledged #EV.

Looking for something similar size and shape: 5 door hatchback with generous boot space but NOT an SUV. Would also consider an estate.

Not going to buy a Tesla, obvs.

Main contenders so far are Polestar 2 or Hyundai Ioniq 5. May also look at Mercedes CLA estate.

Good reliability is a must. Don't want to have to be switching it off and on again every time the software crashes.

Anything else I should look at?

As a consumer, here are some of the things I'm interested in knowing before I make a purchase: • What data does the manufacturer gather for telemetry? • Is location data gathered as part of telemetry? • Is there an "airplane mode" feature to turn off location services/GPS. • What data is gathered by the infotainment/connectivity systems? • What is the manufacturer's data retention policy? • Will the manufacturer share or sell data? • What nations/government agencies will have access to the data? • Is harvested data (truly) anonymized? (Or can it easily be traced back to the owner via meta data?) • Does the vehicle include a "kill switch" feature to suppress all data harvesting? • Can harvested data stored internally with the vehicle be deleted by the owner?
