if you want to make #videos in #London or its nearby suburbs - you'd be better off (and safer) making them about #urbanwildlife (there's plenty around but nothing that can harm you), or #bicycles - even #cars are OK if you dont' get too much into bling / supercar aspect - most of the folk who own such motors haven't got the money through the most honest means, even those who haven't done full on crime are landlords or shitty bosses..

Saddest part of this case is lad seemed quite smart and introverted, he didn't even go out to the music events and wasn't directly involved in any gang type stuff (although the lads father was involved in the London music scene in his own youth so probably didn't see any danger/risk in what he was doing)

NB: some catalogues contain imagery considered sexist nowadays - British society became less prudish over the years, but not in the most inclusive way (not as if objectifying women was necessary to sell alloy wheels, but this did alas become part of #CarCulture especially in 90s and 00s)

The company still exists today, but in a more downsized form (insurers are more ruthless about loading premiums for modified cars or refusing cover altogether, making this a less popular hobby

Some more functional but retro stuff - a #magazine binder made in #Yorkshire for my collection of #CarMechanics magazine (which I discovered *because* of #AnnasArchive and subscribed to the print copies).

The magazine has a surreal combination of "Max Power" era typography/design, but detailed 1970s/80s journalism (which makes it very good, I'd recommend it to anyone in UK who is interested in #cars and does their own #maintenance

There's articles on DIY work and also behind the scenes at professional garages (many of which seem to be also around Yorkshire!)

I start my modern car (2023) that's been sitting for about ten days. The very first thing it does is demand a software update, which fails because the battery is "too low". After driving it to charge, it finally starts the update (locking me out of the car for 30 minutes, completely unusable). Once it's done, the dashboard becomes "more modern" - which basically means it's worse and cluttered with useless information.

Then, I start the old car (2007) that's been parked for MONTHS. It spits out some smelly exhaust, makes a weird noise for a few seconds, and goes: "Let's go, I need to stretch my 'legs'."

I take it to the car wash. A guy there with a brand-new Chinese car takes a look and asks me about it. I tell him it's from 2007.
He peers inside the cabin and asks about the "infotainment" setup, since he "can't see the screen".
I calmly explain that it has a CD player, it even reads MP3s, and it has an Aux-in: I just plug my phone in with a cable and that's it.

He looked at me like I was an alien. Or an ancient Roman. How on earth do I survive without a screen always available, and having to actually plug in a physical cable every time? Crazy!

This is fascinating reading about the #cars situation in the US. #EV vehicles are beginning to come off-lease after the incentive-driven boom of 2022–2025, peaking in 2028 when an expected 800,000 units will hit the market.

In the US, EV prices have cratered. Incentives have disappeared, and customers have shown little interest in buying new ones. A 3-year-old EV today retains only 40% of its initial value, which means off-lease returns will cost whoever finances the deal a lot of money.

This is going to send a small shock wave of losses to lease underwriters across the auto industry. More importantly, it means the prices of used EVs will continue to fall as more units flood inventory, putting downward pressure on new EVs too.

The upside is that there will be a lot of lightly-used EVs available to pick up at lower prices, and you can probably strike good deals for newer units. And with rising gas prices…

I hate how modern EVs (edit: really all cars, even gas cars now) are so heavily tied to the surveillance state.

Sure, you get a battery powered car, but so much telemetry (and control!!!) go back to the corporation and government.

I've started looking into EV conversions (both DIY and small local boutique shops that do them).

They're advertised and geared towards folks that want to take a classic car or some other novelty car and convert it into an EV, but I like the idea of converting an old extreme high mileage (but with good bones and frame) beater into a new EV!

Even paying someone to convert an old ICE car into a new converted EV is often cheaper than buying a new manufactured EV. (At least from a total amount of money spent, I dont know if you can get a car loan to pay for a conversion)

And! (I don't think...) Those conversions don't beacon telemetry back to a centralized source!

Anyhow... this is just a quick observation and something that's out of my price range right now. Buying used EVs is more approachable but still expensive. Buying older hybrids is better it seems. Me, I'm looking into an old ICE car that has high"ish" fuel efficiency.

I wish transit, rail, and local bike infrastructure was more developed in the US, but here I am.

You know the makerspace in Dallas, TX has a community car mechanic shop. I wonder if they do classes on EV conversions...

This is what happens at the brake test (similar tester to the one used for my #MOT - I didn't get to see the actual kit as the mechanic next to my work takes the car up to another #garage in a nearby village as he doesn't have MOT test bays (they take up a lot of room, and require 400 V three phase supply which isn't available in these business units)

Had #MOT (compulsory #vehicle inspection) for #GolfGTI this week (first one since I got it last year)

Took slightly longer than my previous #cars - there are twin exhausts and both must be tested!

Passed with 0 advisories and very good emissions test - only 18ppm of #hydrocarbons which is very good as it means #petrol is being used as much as possible to power the engine rather than going out of exhaust unburned - just as well with price of the stuff at the moment (as well as #environment impact!)

I fitted new #sparkplugs last November, replaced the air filter and did oil service which looks like it has paid off - am going for 6 month oil changes as widely recommended for #EA888 engine ( helps keep timing chain in good condition longer)

am sorry, but $4/gallon in 2026 is a fucking joke. back in the 1990s, gas was $7/g̶a̶l̶l̶o̶n̶ litre in many european countries.

petrol should be $20 a gallon if not more because USians should have changed the way they develop suburbs.

USA DOESN’T NEED CARS, it needs walkable towns with stores, hospitals, schools, post offices, grocery stores.

i hate USA suburbs because they are literally food, health care and education deserts.
