      Okay. Got a new server put together. Now to figure out all the software bits. I would like to run MicroOS and manage it with Cockpit. The question is whether I can do a decent RAID on it.

      Btrfs, MicroOS's default filesystem, only has experimental RAID 5 support. I'm not sure yet how well ZFS would run on it. Which leaves me with traditional RAID. Which I hope works well enough, but I haven't used it in forever.

        `ack` is way faster when `grep --recursive`:

        ```$ time bash -c 'ack dbw32.a | wc -l'
        21
        bash -c 'ack dbw32.a | wc -l' 0.25s user 0.49s system 98% cpu 0.750 total
        ```

        vs

        ```
        $ time bash -c 'grep --recursive dbw32.a . | wc -l'
        22
        bash -c 'grep --recursive dbw32.a . | wc -l' 2.39s user 0.62s system 99% cpu 3.023 total```
        ... because `ack` does not `grep` (!!!) binary files:
        ```$ grep --recursive dbw32.a .
        [...]
        Binary file ./.git/index matches```

          loss32: let’s build a Win32/Linux

          I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, Win32/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, loss32 Win32 plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning system made useful by WINE, the ReactOS userland, and other vital system components comprising a full OS

                          TIL that HP-UX reaches end of life in 3 days on 2025-12-31.

                          When I worked as a contractor for a U.S. government department back in 2010/2011, the team I was on had all HP-UX on PA-RISC, with a few on Itanium.

                          We had speculated whether or not HP was pulling development on HP-UX given that 11i v3 was released in 2007 and there didn't seem to by any movement towards 11i v4 or 12.0.

                          This in addition to Tru64 on Alpha that HP ended earlier.

                                      Troubleshooting on #Linux:

                                      You try something new, and it probably works without having to do anything.
                                      If it doesn't work, you enter into an eldritch horror of complexity and incomplete/conflicting documentation. You give up and just hope that the next version of Debian/Ubuntu/Fedora handles "X" automatically, because you just can't be arsed anymore.

                                      Troubleshooting on #FreeBSD:

                                      You try something new, and it probably doesn't work out of the box.
                                      You fire up the handbook PDF, read through the two pages of pertinent documentation, install a pkg or two, tweak a config file, and bob's your uncle.

                                      Linux bretheren, it need not be like this. It didn't use to be like this. We used to have documentation. HOWTOs. Now they're all obsolete because of needless drastic changes, politics, and empire-building.
