cablespaghetti.dev is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
Okay. Got a new server put together. Now to figure out all the software bits. I would like to run MicroOS and manage it with Cockpit. The question is whether I can do a decent RAID on it.
Btrfs, MicroOS's default filesystem, only has experimental RAID 5 support. I'm not sure yet how well ZFS would run on it. Which leaves me with traditional RAID. Which I hope works well enough, but I haven't used it in forever.
#TIL `ack` is way faster when `grep --recursive`:
```$ time bash -c 'ack dbw32.a | wc -l'
21
bash -c 'ack dbw32.a | wc -l' 0.25s user 0.49s system 98% cpu 0.750 total
```
vs
```
$ time bash -c 'grep --recursive dbw32.a . | wc -l'
22
bash -c 'grep --recursive dbw32.a . | wc -l' 2.39s user 0.62s system 99% cpu 3.023 total```
... because `ack` does not `grep` (!!!) binary files:
```$ grep --recursive dbw32.a .
[...]
Binary file ./.git/index matches```
loss32: let’s build a Win32/Linux
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, Win32/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, loss32 Win32 plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning system made useful by WINE, the ReactOS userland, and other vital system components comprising a full OS

Re: GOG news
Alright alright I am willing to go back to GOG if I am offered a competitive salary and given free reign to create the first actual viable alternative to Steam for Linux gamers.

TIL that HP-UX reaches end of life in 3 days on 2025-12-31.
When I worked as a contractor for a U.S. government department back in 2010/2011, the team I was on had all HP-UX on PA-RISC, with a few on Itanium.
We had speculated whether or not HP was pulling development on HP-UX given that 11i v3 was released in 2007 and there didn't seem to by any movement towards 11i v4 or 12.0.
This in addition to Tru64 on Alpha that HP ended earlier.
How the mighty have fallen.
Great update

Curious if any one around has sorted out getting hibernation to work on a System76 Galaga Pro 5 running Arch Linux. I am struggling to get it to resume properly and starting to wonder if maybe it has something to do with coreboot? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
🆕 blog! “Extracting Video from Motion Photos on Linux”
Modern Android cameras can take "Motion Photos". They capture a few seconds of video from before and after you hit the shutter button. You can then either select the bit of the photo where no-one is blinking, or you can send the whole thing as a little movie.
Some apps (like WhatsApp) will play the motion photo…

@rl_dane I empathize completely. #Documentation is one area where #Linux falls behind #FreeBSD by several orders of magnitude.
I love #Debian. It's my favorite OS but oh my gods the documentation is, at best, an afterthought. And yes, other distros are not that much better.
It's actually *the* reason why I've been using FreeBSD more and taking the time to learn it.
Troubleshooting on #Linux:
You try something new, and it probably works without having to do anything.
If it doesn't work, you enter into an eldritch horror of complexity and incomplete/conflicting documentation. You give up and just hope that the next version of Debian/Ubuntu/Fedora handles "X" automatically, because you just can't be arsed anymore.
Troubleshooting on #FreeBSD:
You try something new, and it probably doesn't work out of the box.
You fire up the handbook PDF, read through the two pages of pertinent documentation, install a pkg or two, tweak a config file, and bob's your uncle.
Linux bretheren, it need not be like this. It didn't use to be like this. We used to have documentation. HOWTOs. Now they're all obsolete because of needless drastic changes, politics, and empire-building.
*sigh*
The #Linux and #OpenSource News train doesn't stop just because I'm on vacation, so here is this week's News video, the last video for 2025! Happy New Year to everyone, and see you next year!

#Linux #Partitions #Partitioning #Parted
I keep reading over the arch wiki page for parted and one thing that doesn't seem clear to me where it says you can only move the end of a partition... If I have 3 partitions;
1. EFI
2. SWAP
3. Root
I already shrunk the root parition down to make room to expand the swap paritition, but if I can only move the end of a partition, don't I need to move the root partition to make room, or does parted automatically take care of shifting that?
Linux tip: `lsof -i :8080` shows which process is using port 8080. Essential when you get "port already in use" errors during development or when troubleshooting service conflicts. #Linux #SystemAdministration
Ghostty, the open source terminal emulator, is moving to non-profit funding.
Creator Mitchell Hashimoto says this will ensure the app avoids surprising its users with a "we've been acquired and need to monetise!" rug-pull.

I'm looking at enabling hibernation. Currently I only have a 4G swap partition configured and 16G of RAM. It looks like my options are to expand my swap partition, or use a swap file I guess. I've read that with compression you may be able to get away with using a smaller swap partition than the amount of RAM, particularly if your system is pretty light on RAM usage to begin with, which I think fits my situation. Any body have any tips they've learned from experience?
