I’ve been a bit MIA from Mastodon for the last few days, but there’s a good reason. I bought a 1974 MGB GT V8 project from the father of a friend of mine. Aside from needing a good deal more work, there was a catch. The car was in Burnet, Texas. I live in Michigan.
So me, my friend, and another friend are on a mission to run down to Texas to retrieve Gerald the GT and bring him back to Michigan.

A rather bizzare #crime - possibly someone who was jealous of the #Audi or had beef with its driver, maybe linked to the #car scene?
Toothpaste and vaseline are unusual things to routinely carry around with you (unless you are camping in a vehicle), but annoying enough to make a mess of of the paintwork without causing major damage (toothpaste is mildly abrasive, but no more so than medium polishing compound), it seems like someone who has some knowledge of #cars and their bodywork (maybe intended more as a prank or mild intimidation)

2001 #Rover 75 in the yard today (1,8 L K series engine, petrol, 5MT ) - one of the last cars made by Rover in Britain..

This blue MGA 1600 belongs to a friend from our local MG club. It's a great looking car and was recognized with a 3rd in class, a high honor in this company.

Wanted to get out of house but not deal with heat/crowds so did a bit more #valeting
Cleaned up #engine bay and tested against #WaterIngress - mechanic must have refreshed / checked seals on brake cylinder bulkhead (where water gets in) / or unblocked the drains (leaves and other muck stops them up) as I poured in 6 litres of water where rain would go and none of it got inside the #car
Everyone will be happy to see this back on the road, there's more demand for #automatic #cars than manual ones from our current staff (many of them are from Commonwealth countries where #driving with #AutomaticGearboxes is more popular)
Not the most refined but better than the other #Easytronic 'box in the other Corsa we had..

Test for water ingress - the water is going through the gulleys in the engine compartment and to the ground (not inside the car where you don't want it!)

Inside of car which is still dry, also showing new airbag ECU in position (it has the purple paint marker on it which the Ebay sellers put on as a security marking (so folk don't yoink the corroded circuit board from another one and put it back in and claim it was defective)
Cooler today (only 25°C) so did exterior #valet of #Vauxhall / #Opel #Corsa - started with #snowfoam mix of Autoglym Polar Blast + BiltHamber Surfex HD at 10% (wouldn't normally use anything as heavy as that but you can see state car was in previously!)
Contact wash with CarPro Reset. No pics of snowfoam due to working fast because heat!
Single stage polish with Koch Chemie 3.01 mild compound+carnuba #wax, cheap cordless DA (compatible with #Makita batteries) and orange pad that came with it.
I'm fairly new to machine #polishing and didn't use best technique and too much polish (though some on YT recommend keeping pad saturated when working in hot weather to prevent polish drying out, and this seemed to work, #bodywork on this #car far from perfect anyway!)

2006 #Vauxhall / #Opel #CorsaC (one of our fleet #cars sat in yard for over a year) saved from scrap - #WaterIngress (known issue with these cars) led to mould and airbag #ECU getting drowned (took ages to source one that wasn't already goosed for same reason but I found one from London a few days ago.).
Cleaned out mould a few days ago, mechanic next door fitted unit and new starter battery - car now runs and even passed MOT!
Still needs other work, fleet insurance and tax has expired so can only drive it around the yard at the moment or I risk being pulled over (random ANPR checks not uncommon here!), way too hot to do full exterior #detail today so did another extraction of interior seats and some more steam cleaning to get rid of moss growing in various places

Something I'd never expect living in the middle of nowhere.
The township is redoing one of the back roads around here. This is how I found out they recently bought a Kei truck as a work truck. I saw the little thing going down the road with equipment in the back.
The township, for as long as I've lived here (25+ years) has always bought new American-brand pickup trucks for their work trucks. Until now, anyway.
Interesting times!
Both #Volkswagen and #Opel / #Vauxhall use convention of #brown wire for an earth/ground (and in the case of this Corsa a black wire for L+), but in modern #ElectricalEngineering a brown wire is treated as live (could be either AC or DC) and black is often L- on older systems (nowadays blue or grey is preferred depending on whether the DC is negative or positive earthed).
I assume these conventions for #cars started long before the standardised European colours for electrical wiring in buildings and other equipment
Which you have to beware of if you often switch between #CarMaintenance and general electric work!

I wonder how many of the young #Youtuber lads here in Blighty who are into #cars are going to get bother for stuff like blurring out their speedometers during spirited #driving ?
I see it fairly often with some testing #tuning / #remaps - TBH I don't even think they are going /that/ fast a lot of the time (they may even be within the tolerance threshold for speed enforcement) but they are making themselves easy targets - quite frankly some of the spicier builds (350 PS+) might be a bit too much for the public roads as there's always the temptation to *use* that power in places where it isn't appropriate..
Good warning from a #mechanic in #NorthCarolina #USA about how #AI is spreading #FUD and bullshit about parts of #cars due to mixing up important details and getting things plain wrong (and with anything from #Volkswagen you *have* to get the specifics exactly right for the engine you have in your car, many designs are quite different across even what /looks/ like the exact same model car, especially between Europe and USA)
I wouldn't even say AI is /that/ good for learning the basics as it adds much wrong and confusing info into the good results..
