I don’t normally post links to NYTimes (because fuck NYT) but this short is chock full of data on cars and pedestrian safety.

Fun fact: the probability of pedestrian deaths due to collisions with cars has been steadily declining worldwide. But something happened in 2009: while other nations continued to see a decline, the rate of pedestrian deaths climbed back up in the US. Today, we see a 75% increase of deaths since 2009.

Why? A good theory is because cars in the US have become taller. We now routinely use trucks and SUVs as daily transportation. These vehicles have tall, blunt hoods that suck pedestrians under the vehicle instead of bouncing them off the top of the hood, and they have giant blind spots that make it difficult to see what’s ahead.

Ferrari has a new "shift by wire" - "clutch by wire" system in the 12 Cilindri.

I'm not sure what to think about it. I don't hate it.

Kinda makes sense the way it works, especially in a GT car.

My only other thought is there's a lot of potential for age related breakage of all the bits involved to make it work.

By the time this trickles down to a car I'd consider buying I'll be in a pine box already. Ha.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Ferrari has made a “Manuale” version of their high-end 12Cilindri grand tourer, which features a “manual” transmission that’s actually a bunch of sensors and actuators that tell software to drive the actual dual-clutch automatic transmission. The “stick shift” and “clutch pedal” are actually completely disconnected from the drivetrain. Oh, and you lose the top two gears, and you can’t switch to manual above 60 MPH.

I guess…this is fine? But even the Koenigsegg CC850 from 2023 features a mechanical clutch pedal. This feels like a gimmick.

And the gimmick costs…drum roll please…$233k, a full 50% above the regular car’s MSRP.

I suspect buyers aren’t going to lose any money on this car. Ferraris have been appreciating rapidly, and limited editions like these even more so. But still, that’s a pretty insulting amount to ask for this feature.

Interestingly the company I got my remap from still have vacancies on their websites for two #mechanics in #Stockport #Manchester #England - I'm surprised these #jobs are still available as surely thats a dream #job for anyone into #cars and the salary seems decent as well (as much as mechanics get down South). There's both junior and senior positions (although the junior one requires 2 years of experience)

Maybe the kind of folk who would be interested don't read the website closely enough..
