Took a risk and ordered an extremely limited quantity of something special for our #EMFCamp Night Market stall. Hoping to provide things to sell which people will love while not ending up losing money on the cost of producing the items if we don't sell it all.

Now deliberating whether to risk even more money to bring ready to use Geiger Counters as a product to the night market, or just stick with my own project as a demo. Would have to sell them all at £45 each to be worthwhile. Who would be interested at this price point? Would have graphing on a screen with logging. Micropython firmware you can customise to your hearts desire. Powered by a USB lead (no internal battery). #EMFCamp

I've just opened my first delivery of stickers for #emfcamp

This is very exciting, but I'm really fighting the urge to spoiler them!

📍Want to know where things are?

We have a map of the site, and this map shows all sorts of useful stuff! On the top right you’ll see some buttons which let you select different layers, for aerial imagery, power lines, network etc.

Useful ones when planning where to camp are lighting (trackways are lit all night), hill shade, and the noise-making venues.

Beware: The things that look like portaloos are Dataklos (network cabinets in portaloo containers). The blue loos are chemical loo disposal points.

🦆 Spiders and ducks?

You may hear/see a lot of references to the above. At past events, we’ve had an excessive amount of one or the other, the spiders being those tiny money spiders. For arachnophobes, we have not seen them in such vast quantities since, but their legend lives on.

The ducks, however, persist, get delivered to site specially*, and make a handy alarm clock for those camping by the lake.

☎️ Phones around the site

There are many ways to stay in contact at EMF! One is with a phone, and since mobile signal is a bit iffy (we’re in a field surrounded by hills) we offer a DECT phone network!

- free to use phones on poles around camp
- bring one of those old cordless house phones* and connect it to the EMF “house”, as it were
- call anyone at EMF for nowt! (We’re 1001).
- call a number of amusing and informative “helplines” such as RAT FACTS (availability depends on whimsy levels)

More info on how to use and connect them will come later, but for now, have a rummage in the attic, scour eBay, and check this list (https://eventphone.de/doku/dect_phone_compatibility_list) to see if you’ve got a compatible phone. You can also follow the @phones team.

am solo for #emfcamp despite having distributed so many free tickets for others and sponsoring.

as it's my first time I'm trying to figure out whether I should join a village or establish one.

if I establish one, it's likely going to be an astro one as it's on theme, maybe kit it out with a weather station and an all sky camera and install a 10" or 12" Dobsonian telescope for all to use. install an instance of Grafana showing the weather stats and the all-sky pic, and allow people to see whether the conditions are good to come look through the scope.

We will have places in the lounge and welfare for you to charge your phones or sit with your laptop plugged in, so if you’re travelling light or don’t have/want power to your tent you don’t need to stress about running out of battery.

We’ll also have a “take one, leave one” box of assorted cables* at info if you’ve forgotten yours, or want to donate a USB C, B or Lightning cable you’ve got clogging up a drawer at home.

*we always find tons of them during teardown

Belated announcement: this weekend I will be at https://retrofest.uk with my #PERQ 2T2 graphical workstation from 1984, which (after months of troubleshooting, which I promise to describe someday) appears to have been working just now. I've successfully booted

• PNX - a System III Unix by ICL with a pre-X11 GUI
• POS - a simple DOS-like OS that was more popular in the US
• RSRE Flex - made by MoD researchers and one of the weirdest OSs I have ever experienced

My exhibit could be one of the first public displays of Flex in a few decades, and I'm excited to show it off. Come early for best odds of seeing it working, as the PERQ is prone to hardware failure. If the machine breaks, I'll have the emulator handy, and if you can't make it, I'll also be giving a whole talk on Flex at #emfcamp in July. Hope to see you soon!
