An old Gigaset DECT handset in grey and black plastic lying on the grubby surface of my MDF workbench. The phone is labelled with my orga handle "jonathanh" and my on-site phone number 4644. The screen says that the time is 00:00 and is complaining "No Base". So I'll not know if it actually works until I get on site next week.

Have been wishing I had time for #EMFCamp projects, I'm not short of ideas... just short of time, as ever. But it's fun to vicariously enjoy the projects, exasperations, and hints from others here... and I'll get to enjoy the fruits of these labours next week. So soon. Argh.

Waaaaaay back in the mists of @rpimag history ... in Hackspace Magazine issue 66 no less.. I wrote an article I enjoyed researching on advanced paper aeroplanes. I found out about and older style of laminated paper planes and, of course, whipped up my own design in @inkscape for the #vinylcutter. I've just dug out the files today as I thought they might make a cheap fun thing for the #emfcamp night market or for trades!

Stress tested the hauler a tiny bit last night before the trip to #emfcamp this week coming. Seemed to work alright, hates the grass but luckily there's track way and stuff. Brakes work well! Final firmware improvements today and some electronics work to reinstate bits then it's reached MVP stage.

PSA: check the batteries in your old electronics before they cause a fire.

I discovered some puffy batteries in old feature phones stored in the back of the cupboard. I'm going to remove all the batteries from tech like this and bring them to the recycling - or get rid of the whole device if I don't need it anymore. Might be worthwhile for those of us packing for #EMFCamp to pair this errand with packing. That's why I was digging though the pile of old feature phones.

Nice that it's usually easy to just remove batteries from the feature phones I was looking at - no tools required. Some smartphones/laptops have the batteries glued in, which means it's much better to just get rid of the whole device :(

Spending my day working on "Gooseventure: The Valued Goose Game" which is the text-based adventure game I'm developing for #EMFCamp. It'll be available online after the event as freeware, but the current aim is for it to be playable in the EMF arcade next week.

Right, what DECT phones should we get for #EMFCamp... the Gigaset A170H seems to be the most obvious low-hanging-fruit option. I'd kinda like something more slimline, but I am unsure of the options and don't want to spend >£100 on a pair (I mean, lower the better and and, and I was considering some 2nd hand options from eBay but I just want cheap/quick/reliable do getting a new A170 Duo set seems the obvious call.)

I am assuming getting the two handsets from a "duo" set would be able to connect to the network as independent handsets/endpoints?

Does anyone go to a local #parkrun while at the festival? Or just do solo or group runs on site?

I’m a slow novice #runner, I do a #5k in about 42 minutes. It would be nice to do a run or two while I’m there.

If you have any advice on nice routes to run in the vicinity, or are at a similar level and would like to do a group run, let me know.

OK, but we're going to over-engineer the hell out of this anyway because it's #EMFCamp SEASON!

So we had a very odd encounter at #EMFCamp on Saturday night. We were at the bar, stood next to two guys buying drinks, and the following ensued (I'm paraphrasing from memory here):

Him: "What's this festival about then? We saw some people soldering in tents, is this some sort of electronics thing?"
Me: "Sorry what? I, what, how do you not..."
Him: "Don't tell anybody, but we snuck in. We told the people at the gate we were with the band and the mugs let us drive right through"

At this point I tried to explain #EMFCamp, but I was floundering and he didn't want to listen anyway. It did seem important to him, though, that we (well, particularly my friend Laura) be impressed by him owning a Morgan motor car. His mate apologised and they wandered off.

What I *wish* I'd said was something like "Fuck off, you odious sneering Tory c*nt" but I didn't really want to start a fight in the #EMFCamp bar, although it was pointed out to me later that the bar would have had my back and seeing a Tory ruthlessly stomped by people in cat ears and LED hats would have been very funny.

But the more I thought about it, the more vexed I got. Like, we've given the whole world over to tedious uptight mediocre middle-aged c*nts. All we want is this field for 3 days, why can't you fuck off and leave us alone?

God bless Valve and their work on Proton, it’s looking like the dream of the #emfcamp arcade being Windows free will in fact be a reality. So far none of the games have screamed at me for running them on our shonky bazzite-based image

In the ultimate of Fediverse influence, just after I was saying how I wanted a weekend away for my birthday, I happened to click and and check at just the right time to get returned tickets for us (i.e. me and @james_keogh) to go to this #EMFcamp thing. Thank you to all posting tips for newbies - don’t try to do too much seems the main one.
