cablespaghetti.dev is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
Linux 7.0 has been released (don't get excited by the shiny new version number, mind).
What's new? As ever, a lot – swap performance boosts, Intel TSX re-enabled on 10th gen and newer Intel CPUs, more legacy AMD GPU driver buffs and, on a quirky note, support for the Rock Band 4 Bluetooth guitar!

New #Linux #kernel #policy: when writing code, humans can be "assisted" by "#AI", but they have to disclose it, and take full responsibility, as contributors.
While this gets celebrated as a "pragmatic stance", it simply delegates responsibilities to individual contributors that no one in good conscience can reasonably take.
Would you be willing to guarantee, legally binding, with all consequences, that your "AI" "assistant" didn't copy-paste code that's under an incompatible license? Or even proprietary, stolen one?
This is a cop out, not a responsible policy. Basically the dirty #subcontractor pattern: Everybody knows that nobody can actually guarantee what they're promising, but hey, wink wink here's their signature, they "promised" it wink wink
There is hope for us #Linux users to natively run a #Flexradio !!

I have decided that since ProtonMail's "app" for Linux is just a webapp anyway, I will simply run it in my browser and, I think, not take up twice as much RAM.
I really wish there were a desktop app that interacted with their tagging system. Perhaps I should be on a *less* security-focused email system.
I decided to dedicate my weekend to server maintenance and documentation.
Yesterday, I managed to install Immich using Quadlets, following the instructions on this very insightful repository, then I tried to migrate a Nextcloud installation from YunoHost to my new homelab. I started a #tmux session so that @sirodoht could kindly join to help me. We tinkered for two hours, but there was too much to do 🤯
Today, I spent the whole day writing documentation for these and many other things I learned/did in the past couple of months, since I am terrible at taking notes of the technical experiments I do.
I am exhausted, but also quite discouraged. The more I write, the more I feel there is to write. I really think I don’t have the time and the energy, but when it’s done it’s very fulfilling, and it’s very useful to have a lot of references in the future.
I will edit this post once what I wrote gets published on tommi.space.

Something that I'd love to be able to do, but haven't figured out how, yet:
You can run somecommand 2>&1 > log.txt to get STDOUT and STDERR together, but you won't know which is which.
You can run somecommand 2>err.txt >log.txt to get STDOUT and STDERR separate, but you won't know the timing, or which error messages happened between which STDOUT messages.
I'd like to figure out some way to combine both, so you end up with a file like this:
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
2: this was a STDERR message
2: this was a STDERR message
1: this was a STDOUT message
2: this was a STDERR message
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
2: this was a STDERR message
2: this was a STDERR message
Any ideas? @mirabilos?
I don’t use Twitter or Microsoft Edge, but my network logs tell a different story.
Following my post on why I’m skipping the proprietary "Little Snitch" port for Linux, I spent Saturday evening watching the "invisible conversation" between my family’s idle devices and Big Tech servers. Even with no one actively online, the telemetry never stops.
The receipts are now on the blog:

After using #OpenBSD for a while I got used to finding ALL answers in MAN pages. #Linux has them since forever, but man pages on OpenBSD are on another level.
So yesterday I installed Arch Linux to remind myself on overall feel of that OS and I noticed that it doesn't have man command (archinstall with a desktop preset).
I am aware that everything is optional on Arch Linux, but having man pages optional feels rather weird after using OpenBSD.
So geht digitale Souveränität! 💪🇪🇺

I recently switched to #Linux Mint. I mean, the reasons are obvious so I will save that for a different time. What really struck me was just how easy it was to actually do it. Problems were minor and mainly due to the fact that I have an Nvidia card in my laptop.
Aside from that, I was up and running quickly. Apps I wanted, (including Steam,) were easy to find and install. There were a couple apps that I needed to find replacements for, like Notepad++.
Yesterday, I deleted my #Windows drive.
Just realised that we don't have any Windows machines in the house.
We have one iMac running Apple OSX, 2 Mac laptops running #Linux, a Lenovo laptop running Linux, a mini PC running Linux and a Microsft Surface running Linux.
Every one of these machines running Linux is stable and have no problems. 😀
Time for our #Linux and #OpenSource news video! In this one, France is announcing a move to Linux and to Open Source solutions, with each ministry being required to provide a plan to do so!
We also have more distros speaking on age verification, KDE revamping some themes to give you more options, and a lot more:

@EUCommission, time to cut a lot of imports from USA! We pay around 6 BILLIONS € every MONTH just for a few digital services that we can / could switch for European or #FreeSoftware #LibreSoftware #OpenSource alternatives like #Linux, @libreoffice and European cloud providers.
And even, by supporting libre software we support more equal humankind globally, as libre software can be used even by economically challenged people worldwide, such leaving no one behind 🤗
Any suggestions for a Linux native time tracking app? Need to track time for client billing, really liked Timemator on Mac and don't want a web based solution.

May this sanity spread to all nations.
FWIW you can be absolutely sure there is no way the US public, gov and mil sectors would ever allow the use of non-US proprietary OS's.
We've all just normalised US tech dependency. Tireless pressure gangs of lobbyists on insane carbon miles have helped of course.

Is there any good way of moving a process into a systemd StartTransientScope together with its children?
In niri we put spawned processes into scopes, so oomd and other stuff can work properly. Usually you do it by putting yourself into a scope, then exec-ing the target program. But that's a 7 ms toll on startup time, so in niri we spawn the program right away, and then put it into a scope. However, if the program forks fast enough, that child doesn't go into the scope..
Just 4 years ago I wouldn't have believed this shift as remotely possible.
